Mega Man X7 is a bold departure from the classic 2D side-scrolling roots of the series and it’s not for everyone but if you're into something different and adventurous it’s worth a look. Released in 2003 it was one of the first major 3D entries in the long-running Mega Man franchise and it takes you into a fully rendered world where you zip through environments with a mix of running, jumping, and firing your iconic buster. The game keeps the core fun of hunting down bosses and stealing their abilities to progress but now you’re doing it in three dimensions with more complex level designs. There’s a real sense of momentum as you glide across floating platforms, blast through enemy lines, and take on giant robot bosses with unique attack patterns. The combat is fast and satisfying and the level variety gives you a real sense of exploration even if the camera can get awkward at times. It’s not perfect but if you love action platformers that push the envelope and aren’t afraid to take a creative risk it’s a wild ride that still holds up for fans of the series.
