Base Wars is a surprisingly engaging sports game from 1991 that lets you control a soccer team. It’s a really unique take on the genre because instead of traditional soccer gameplay you’re managing your team’s positioning on the field using a grid system. You strategically move your players to create openings and try to get the ball into the opponent’s goal. The game is all about planning your moves and anticipating your opponent’s actions. It’s simple to pick up but offers a good amount of depth as you learn the best ways to utilize your team’s strengths. It's a blast to play against a friend locally and see who can outmaneuver the other. It’s a classic NES title that definitely holds up as a fun and different sports experience.
